Convention Service Project
For this year's convention service project, we will be holding a book/school supply drive for elementary school students on behalf of our sister, Maria Veloz. This year, Maria will be teaching in a 2nd grade ICT (half general education, half special education) at Growing Up Green Charter School (GUG) in Queens New York. GUG is a low-income school that serves a very diverse group of students. As a progressive school, they make it their mission to meet individual student social-emotion, cognitive and physical development as well as their academic progress. Students at this school are empowered to be conscious, contributing members of their community through a rigorous curriculum and an engaging green culture. The students have a large range of learning needs and therefore students are taught early on that "equality is not equity." They use methods that allow them to see the child as a whole and in order to meet their individual needs they use the following teaching methods: inclusion, interactive outdoor trips, guest speakers and a variety of manipulatives.
Every day is different, Maria encourages students to reflect on how they feel and what they want to accomplish on a daily basis. The items on this Amazon Wishlist will provide students with organizational tools and educational games to support student choice as they independently take care of their needs throughout the year. By providing students with choices, we hope to encourage active engagement, internal motivation and self-reflection.
We invite you to browse the list and make a purchase or two.
